Where It Began
DJ Q’s musical journey started from a young age listening to music played by his parents. It was at the age of 12 when Q first got involved with the UK Garage scene, buying vinyls and tape packs. When his vinyl collection grew larger Q finally got a pair of decks in his bedroom. After teaching himself to mix Q started to get bookings at local parties at the age of 15.
Producing and 1Xtra
Producing came at the age of 16 when he attended college (BTEC National Diploma, Music Technology) Q’s first real taste of the UKG scene was when he was invited on as a guest on one of the UKG shows to showcase a few of the songs he produced. While at the station he dropped off a mix CD, and was later asked to host a show on the UK’s leading black music station. Q Joined 1xtra in as a DJ to host the UKG Mixshow, being the youngest DJ at the station he brought a new energy and sound the the airwaves of which had the foundation of UKG, but with a new twist. It was around the same time Q released his first vinyl, ‘Love Like This (The Reasons)’ which was a big hit on the 4×4 Garage / Bassline scene. This brought him more bookings at Bassline events and as time Q produced more hits such as ‘Tea Bag’, ‘Dirty’ and later ‘You Wot!’ DJ Q is now at the forefront of the Bassline scene as one of its Leading DJ’s / Producers.
2008 saw Q hit mainstream success with remix credits to his name such as ‘Valerie’ by Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse, Dizzy Rascal’s ‘Flex’, Katy B, H20 feat Platnum ‘Whats it Gonna Be’ , and Platnum’s latest single ‘Love Shy’ to name a few. Later on Q went on to remix singles by Lethal B, Donaeo and just recently has remixed Rusko’s latest single, Everyday which was also released in America and the forthcoming single Take It Back by Toddla T feat. Shola Ama. Q’s own production includes the huge ‘You wot’ Single featuring MC Bonez, which was released nationally via Ministry of Sound Q has also produced singles for artists such as Platnum, And the single he produced for JME (Oh) was one of the more popular cuts from the album Blam and it reached Number 1 in the 1Xtra UKG chart. Aside from the Weekly 1Xtra show, DJ Q has been embraced by Radio One with many guest slots such as ‘the Essential mix’, Trevor Nelson’s Saturday show, a mini mix for Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Mistajam & Pete Tong’s ‘In New Music We Trust’, and recently Q is part of the 1Xtra Mix show which sees him host a show on Radio One on Saturday nights (3am till 5am) Q has also played music in various countries over the years such as Ibiza, Malia, Ayia Napa, Kos, France, Corfu, Marbella, Switzerland & America. .
